Students applying to University in Europe or the US will receive assistance with no charge from the school University Counselor. The Diploma is fully recognized by British and American Universities and students will undergo a full programme of university research and counseling throughout the two years. Ionios School seeks to support students through their University choices and applications, through one-to-one discussions, as well as workshops throughout the year. The University Counseling Office is located in the IB Department premises (29 Rimini St., 152 37, Filothei) and is staffed by Mr. Philip Walker.
Students are encouraged to contact the University Counselor for an appointment. Lyceum 1 students are encouraged to attend career consultations. There will also be presentations on foreign universities that the Ionios School student cohort can attend.
When Students decide they want to do the IB Diploma they will have a meeting with the IB Diploma Programme Coordinator and the University Counselor. During this meeting, students will be advised on which subjects to choose according to their ability and career choices (they will have already received the Handbook prior to their meeting). Advice on universities will be given depending on where the student wants to continue his/her studies.
The procedure for the UK will be explained and advice on how to do their own personal research and how to write their personal statement will be given. The procedure for the USA/ Canada, Italy and other European countries will also be explained.
The procedure for University application will start around Easter of IB DP Year 1. Students will make an appointment with the University Counselor who will explain the different procedures again and provide application forms etc. Subject Teachers will work closely with the University Counselor by giving references and accurate reports and predicted grades for each student.
In IB DP year 2, applications will be sent according to the dates given by the different countries and universities. Records will be kept at all times. Predicted grades will be closely supervised.
When the results arrive in July, the University Counselor will be available to help to solve any problems that might occur. The students will have all the help needed to deal with clearance, if this is needed. The IBO sends results directly to universities in the UK, Holland, and many other countries.
